5 Week Course: Light and Color Design in Painting (Oct 24 - Nov 21, 2026)
(Scroll down for english description)

5 Week Course: Light and Color Design in Painting (Oct 24 - Nov 21, 2026)
Course description:
This is a 5-week in-person course on light and color design taught by watercolor artist RAINB.W (Rainbow). This course is suitable for intermediate painters who are interested in improving their use of light and color in painting.
Class introduction:
Light and color are two of the most powerful tools we have as painters. Many students can clearly imagine the mood, feeling, and atmosphere they want to create, yet struggle when it comes to actually putting it on paper. The common frustration is: “I know what I want, but I just can’t get the colors and lighting right, no matter how much I try to fix it.”
This course is designed to address that exact gap. We will combine theory and practice, with a specific focus on applying light and color to cityscape painting.
In the first three weeks, we will carefully build a strong foundation: understanding light and value, how value affects visual structure and shapes, the value of colors, accurate color mixing, identifying and understanding light sources, and how to properly read light in reference photos.
In Weeks 4 and 5, we move into design and intention. Once you have a solid grasp of accurate color, value, and lighting, we will explore how to intentionally break or bend the rules — adjusting color, value, and light to create a specific mood, feeling, focus, or purpose in your painting. We will also cover practical color theory, color harmony, and working with a limited palette.
Light and color design is foundational to how I build my own paintings. It has taken years of thoughtful reflection to clarify the core concepts I rely on, and I believe these ideas will be genuinely helpful for others who want to improve. The goal of this course is not to help you “paint like me,” but to give you a deep enough understanding so you can apply these principles in your own way as you develop your personal style.
This course will include the use of both watercolor and gouache. Although I am primarily a watercolor painter, some concepts are more clearly learned with gouache because it removes the added complexity of transparency that watercolor brings.
Course Date and time:
October 24, 31, November 7, 14, 21
Saturdays 2:15- 4:30pm. (5 weeks in total)
Week 1 (10/24): Light and Value
Week 2 (10/31): Value in Color
Week 3 (11/07): Reading Light Source & Color Mixing Accuracy
Week 4 (11/14): Light and Color Design Intention (Part 1)
Week 5 (11/21): Light and Color Design Intention (Part 2)
Location: Unit 802, 8/F, United China Plaza, 1008 Tai Nan West Street, Cheung Sha Wan, Kowloon. (1 min walk from Lai Chi Kok MTR exit B1)
Language: Class will be taught in Cantonese. (If you are an English speaker, please let me know, I may open an English class if we have enough interest)
Who is this class for: Intermediate painters who already have some painting experience and want to strengthen their understanding and use of light and color. Some experience with cityscape painting is preferred. Because this course focuses on color and light theory rather than drawing, we will not go into detail on how to sketch cityscapes, perspective, or building structure. Having a basic ability to draw cityscape elements will allow you to put more attention on applying the light and color concepts.
We will be working with watercolor and gouache in class, but the principles of light and color design are applicable to artists working in watercolor, gouache, acrylic, oil, or mixed media etc.
Limited spaces available, first come first served. Course fee is a flat rate, students must sign up for the full program, there is no credit or makeup for missed classes. Register at www.rainbw.art/class
You will receive an email confirmation from Rainbow within 24-48 hours of purchase. Class payment is nonrefundable. Please email me at hello@rainbw.art if you have any concerns.
Why is this class focused on light and color design?
I believe that most painters do not lack creativity or vision — we can usually picture the feeling or atmosphere we want. The real difficulty lies in the foundational skills of seeing, analyzing, and executing light, value, and color accurately. Without these skills, it becomes very hard to translate what we imagine onto the paper. This course focuses on building that technical understanding first, so that later you can deliberately design and adjust light and color with clear intention. These principles are useful at every stage of an artist’s development.
What language is this course conducted in?
This course will be taught in Cantonese. If you are an English speaker and interested in taking this course in person, please let me know. If there is enough interest, I will consider opening an English version in the future. Because this class involves a lot of explanation and discussion of concepts, running it bilingually at the same time would be more difficult than in my shorter one-day workshops.
Is this course suitable for beginners?
This course is designed for intermediate painters who already have some painting experience and want to strengthen their understanding and use of light and color. Absolute beginners in painting may find the pace and content more challenging, as we move relatively quickly into analyzing light, value relationships, and intentional design choices.
We will be working with watercolor and gouache in class, but the principles of light and color design are applicable to artists working in watercolor, gouache, acrylic, oil, or mixed media.
If you are still building basic watercolor control and water handling skills, I recommend starting with my Watercolor Foundations and Water Control course first.
What painting materials do I need?
All painting materials will be provided for you to use during class in person. If you want to practice more at home, you will need to purchase your own tools for home use. Rainbow will give you a list of recommended tools on the first day of class.
How is this different from your other classes?
My classes serve different purposes depending on where you are in your painting journey:
- 1-day workshops are focused, practical sessions. They are straightforward step-by-step walkthroughs of a specific cityscape painting. You follow along and complete one finished piece in a single day. These are great for experiencing my process and painting a complete work in a short time.
- 5-week Watercolor Foundations and Water Control is designed for beginners (and those who want to strengthen their basics). It takes a slow, detailed approach, starting from materials and tools, then building essential skills in water control, brush handling, and intuition through targeted drills and exercises. We finish by applying these foundations to three full cityscape paintings. The emphasis is on mastering how water and the brush behave.
- This 5-week Light and Color Design course is for intermediate painters. It focuses on understanding and using light, value, and color more intentionally. In the first three weeks we build a clear foundation in seeing color and light, mixing color accurately. In the final two weeks we explore design and intention — how to adjust light and color to create a specific mood, atmosphere, or focus. We work with both watercolor and gouache, and apply the concepts to cityscapes (basic drawing ability is preferred, as we do not cover perspective or building structure in detail).
Limited spaces available, first come first served. Course fee is a flat rate, students must sign up for the full program, there is no credit or makeup for missed classes.
