(Oct 24 - Nov 21, 2026)
(Scroll down for english description)

Course description:
This is a 5-week in-person course on watercolor foundations and water control taught by watercolor artist RAINB.W (Rainbow). This course is suitable for beginner painters who are serious about building and refining their watercolor technique.
Class introduction:
Watercolor is a beautiful yet very challenging medium. When learning this medium, many of us get thrown straight into painting, picking things up along the way, without anyone clearly explaining the fundamental elements or breaking down the inner workings of this medium. Painting classes often jump straight into painting subjects very quickly, and as a result, students do not have the chance to clearly learn the foundational skills that make a real difference, such as:
- How different brush and paper choices can dramatically change your results
- How to develop the sensitivity and intuition to read the wetness of the paper
- Understanding the crucial water-to-paint ratio and how it affects every application and every stroke you make
This is why I decided to create this class “Watercolor Foundations and Water Control.”
This class is designed for beginner painters who are serious about building and refining their technique. We will slow things down and start right from the beginning — carefully developing the essential foundations of water control, brush handling, and intuition — before applying everything to real cityscape paintings. In the 5 weeks, we will go through many drills and practice exercises together in each class, and paint 3 full cityscapes in total.
Course Date and Time:
October 24, 31, November 7, 14, 21
Saturdays 11:00-1:15pm. (5 weeks in total)
Week 1 (10/24): Watercolor Tools and Foundations

Week 3 (11/07): Adding Structure – Blending Wet and Dry Techniques
Week 4 (11/14): Refining Skills and Hand Movement
Week 5 (11/21): Putting it all together

Why is this class focused on water control?
In order to paint well in watercolor, we have to become well acquainted with how to control the “water” of watercolor. We can have great vision and ideas of how we want a painting to look, but if we don’t develop the sensitivity and skill in water control, we won’t be able to paint what we have in our mind. Water control includes knowledge of how our brushes, paper, water, paint, timing, and technique all interchangeably and simultaneously influence each other. This is foundational and crucial at every level. What you learn here will help you if you want to seriously improve your watercolor painting technique.
What language is this course conducted in?
This course will be taught in Cantonese. If you are an English speaker and you are interested in taking this course in-person, please let me know. If I have enough people interested, I will consider opening a class in English next time. Because this class includes a lot of talking and explaining concepts, it will be more difficult to do bilingual simultaneously (which I usually do in my short 1-day workshops).
Is this course suitable for beginners?
Yes, this course is suitable for beginner painters who want to build strong, lasting foundations in watercolor. We’ll take things slow, breaking everything down step by step so nothing feels overwhelming. That said, I designed it with real progress in mind: expect to be gently challenged as we move from simple exercises (like gradients and basic washes) to painting full night cityscapes by Week 5. We improve and progress through doing — trying, making mistakes, and trying again. Once you have learned the concepts and understanding through this course, you will have a much better grasp on how to practice and continue improving on your own afterwards.
How is this different from your other classes?
If you have taken my other 1-day workshops before, you will know that they are quite straightforward step-by-step walkthroughs of a specific cityscape painting. This class, on the other hand, takes a slower pace and we break down the techniques in much more detail, covering everything from the beginning of materials and tools to specific drills and exercises, before we go on and paint several cityscape paintings together.
One of the main difficulties for conventional painting classes is that we skip technique and go to painting subjects too quickly, especially for painters who are just starting out. This class is designed to do the opposite: we spend focused time building solid foundations first, so that when we finally apply the techniques to full cityscapes, students have a clearer understanding, stronger control, and will be able to identify what went wrong, how to improve, etc.
What painting materials do I need?
All painting materials will be provided for you to use during class in person. If you want to practice more at home, you will need to purchase your own tools for home use. Rainbow will give you a list of recommended tools on the first day of class.
Will this course teach me everything I need to know about painting?
No, and that is intentional. This course focuses on the foundations of watercolor: water control. We touch lightly on other things — like basic color choices and simplifying a composition — during the full cityscape demos in Weeks 3, 4, and 5, because they come up naturally. But we do not cover deep color theory or detailed sketching; those are for later courses or separate practice. I kept the exercises and paintings simple in color and drawing so you can put all your attention on learning how water and the brush behave. Like I said in the beginning, I believe that learning water control is foundational and is what is going to help you improve seriously. That is why this course is specifically focused on water control.
